Art.
My work covers a fairly broad spectrum. Jewelry, sculpture, glass, canvas, film. These are forms that convey meaningful content to me. I experiment, I explore.
But history, symbolism, and geometry are what have drawn me in from start to finish. That’s also the path that led me to study water and to create carafes.
Story.
More like a life journey. History—the marginal kind, the kind not taught in school, but which you have to read about in books by people who, like me, weren’t satisfied with the conventional narrative. It’s in this history that symbolism makes sense. I draw inspiration from this history and from nature. In recent years, I’ve been discovering scientists who connect ideas, who work with concepts and information, who don’t dismiss old rituals but, on the contrary, explore them.
My path is paved with a mosaic of many fragments. Gaudí would be pleased.
The carafe.
On this journey, the idea comes first, and a little further along, the finished water carafe. Its base bears a geometric pattern. Why? Because geometry is hidden in nature, yet it is everywhere. It gives nature order; nature grows from it. And so it can even transform stagnant water into healthy water.
Working with water, just like water itself, had almost evaporated from my work for a while, but lately it has been gaining strength again.
Playgrounds.
After my divorce, part of my life was filled with collaborating with colleagues under the name Strašné dítě. We built playgrounds—from design to construction—which is very sculptural, very physical, and very craft-oriented. It involved a lot of contact with children and mud.
Film.
This came after the playgrounds. It’s a world of its own with very specific roles; it moves very quickly. In film, I worked in the art department—which handles set design—the environment in which the actors move.
Mothers and Fathers.
When our now-grown children were little, Lenka Klodová, Marek Rejent, Martin Péč, and I founded the group Mothers and Fathers to explore the rarely discussed topic of the parent-artist dynamic.
We’re still going strong today, even though our focus is slowly shifting to the next generation.
I usually start without a concept. Sometimes it turns out to be a dead end; other times, a unifying theme emerges.
Lately, I’ve been painting. I can’t help myself.
